Iran and the United States agreed this Saturday to advance to the next phase of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program at the indirect meeting held in Rome, reported Oman, which acts as an intermediary between the two rivals.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff held indirect negotiations for four hours in Rome today, mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, in the second meeting of this type between the two countries.

Araqchi confirmed that the indirect negotiations with the United States have entered “a new phase”

“It was a productive session where we consolidated basic understandings,” Araqchi told the press. Unlike the first meeting in Muscat, which focused on unlocking the process, this round allowed “shared principles” to be established without revealing specific details.

Negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program will advance with three days of technical work in Oman from 23 to 25 April, focusing on operational details by nuclear and economic experts. At the same time, the director of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, is making representations in Rome, although the agency’s direct participation in the negotiations is considered premature, although it will play a crucial role in verification.

For his part, the Omani FM said in a statement that Araqchi and Witkoff “agreed to initiate the next phase of their talks, which aim to seal a fair, lasting and binding agreement that guarantees Iran’s complete liberation from nuclear weapons and sanctions and that maintains its capacity to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.”

Iran and the United States resumed nuclear negotiations in Muscat, Oman, in a meeting described as constructive by both sides. These talks are taking place in a tense context due to the continued threats of Donald Trump, who does not rule out a possible Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities if no agreement is reached.

Trump, who abandoned the 2015 nuclear pact, has resumed his policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran through sanctions to limit oil sales.
